The 2018 Extortion 17 Memorial Virtual Run | hosted by Operation Valor
“On August 6, 2011, a U.S. Army CH-47D Chinook helicopter approached a landing zone in Afghanistan 40 miles southwest of Kabul. The helicopter, call sign Extortion 17, was on a mission to reinforce American and coalition special operations troops. It would never return. Insurgents fired at the Chinook, severed one of its rear rotor blades, and brought it crashing to the ground. All 38 onboard perished instantly in the single greatest moment of sacrifice for Americans in the war in Afghanistan. Those killed were some of the U.S.’s most highly trained and battle-honed commandos, including 15 men from the Gold Squadron of the Naval Special Warfare Development Group, known popularly as SEAL Team 6, which had raided a Pakistan compound and killed Osama bin Laden just three months earlier.” — Ed Darak The Final Mission of Extortion 17
Join us in celebration of the lives and memories of the 31 heroes lost on that tragic flight.
A Virtual Race? Yes!
Virtual races are just like traditional races with a shirt, medal, community and fun, but you can run, walk or hike your race wherever you want with whomever you want. Even on a treadmill! Racers report their time and then we send a medal to them for completing the race. What have you got to lose? Help those that have sacrificed and given so much for us! Try us out – Register now!
How does a Virtual Race work?
1. You register for your spot and choose the distance(s) you want to run (5K, 10K, 13.1m or ALL)
2. During the window of the race, you run the distance you registered for. But YOU pick the time and location to run it. Treadmills ARE allowed. As long as its within the race window, you are good to go!
3. You record your time. (OPTIONAL. For podium consideration ONLY)
4. Submit your race time at the link provided with your registration. (OPTIONAL. For podium consideration ONLY)
5. We post your time on our leader board.
6. Once we receive your race time we send out your finisher’s medal and any other items you’ve ordered.
The race window is: 06 Aug – 26 Aug
Finisher medals are provided to ALL registrants. Those who sign up for ALL 3 distances will also earn the coveted “Trifecta” medal. (See the store for heavily discounted combos!)
